Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly opens Ayrfield Primary Care Centre

Speaking at the opening of the Ayrfield Primary Care Centre, Minister Reilly said

I am delighted to be at the official launch of this centre. This is the kind of service the public wants and deserves. Here we see the provision of an extensive range of integrated services, all in the same building.The planned reform of the health services under this Government will include a far greater emphasis on primary care services in keeping with the principle of treating the patient at the appropriate lowest level of complexity. This Centre in Kilkenny and others like it will allow many patients have their necessary treatment close to home and will help to reduce unnecessary acute hospital admissions

A Vision for Change – Parliamentary Question

In a Parliamentary Question on A Vision for Change Minister of State at the Department of Health said:

This Government is committed to implementing A Vision for Change and reforming our model of health care delivery so that more and better quality care is delivered in the community which will facilitate access to housing, education and employment. A Vision for Change also recognised that all citizens should be treated equally and that access to housing and employment for individuals with mental health problems should be on the same basis as any other citizen. The need for the Irish Government to ensure that tackling childhood obesity is prioritised by the Government.

I thank Deputy O’Donovan for raising this important topic.  The prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased with alarming speed in recent decades; so  much so that the World Health Organisation calls it a “a global epidemic.” .  The situation in Ireland mirrors the global obesity epidemic, with 61% of Irish adults now overweight or obese.  Read the rest of this entry »
